Approximately 2-3 hours North of the Clare Valley (South Australia's most northern Wine region and location for the film "Breaker Morant" and "Mad Max") and 11 Km south of Hawker are the Yourambulla Caves.

Used probably as an Australian Aboriginal inititation site (and not habitation) there are three caves with many charcoal and Red Ochre paintings.

My favourite is the colorful, petite (no larger than a 3-5 year old childs hand) and exquisite "Hand". The paintings are not dated but could possibly be 8-10,000 years old.

The hand image is produced by spray painting a mouthful of red ochre over the hand placed on the cave wall.
